Kennon Global Marathon

What: Kennon Global Marathon 2012

When: 15th April 2012 Sunday, 4:00 AM (21K Assembly)

Where: Kennon Road, Tuba, Benguet to Lake Drive, Burnham Park, Baguio City

Why "global" marathon?

Kennon Marathon is called "global" because it is envisioned to be a tribute to the 46 countries that helped construct Kennon Road.

Unknown to many, Kennon Road was built with the help of foreign workers from 46 different countries. It was the Americans who served as the taskmasters of this monumental project, but an estimated 4,000 foreign workers from various nationalities were the ones who toiled for three and a half years (July 1, 1901 to January 29, 1905) just to complete what was then known as the Benguet Road.

This road, eventually known as Kennon Road, opened Baguio to the world. It is also a monument to global partnership -- a proof that people of all creeds can unite under one purpose.

Exercise Is a Necessary Treatment for All Types of Arthritis

by Dr. Gabe Mirkin, M.D.

Arthritis is classified into three types:
  1. Inflammatory
  2. Degenerative
  3. Traumatic

Your doctor first checks to see if you have a history of trauma that damaged your joint. If you don't, he does a host of blood tests looking for a source of inflammation (an overactive immunity): various diseases, infections or the deposition of crystals in the joint fluid. If he finds none of these, he announces to you that you have osteoarthritis, which means that he doesn't have the foggiest idea what is causing your joint pain. He then does X-rays and MRIs. If the cartilage is gone and a bone at the joint touches the end of the opposing bone, he may recommend a joint replacement. If the cartilage is intact, the major treatment is exercise (Current Pain and Headache Reports, December 2011: 15(6):423-30).

Regardless of the cause of your joint pain, inactivity will increase damage to the joint. If you don't move that joint, you can expect it to degenerate to the point where the joint loses its ability to move through its full range of motion. When you stop using a joint, the muscles around it grow weak and the tendons stiffen. This leads to further joint damage and lack of mobility. Of course, you should not pound on, or apply too much force on damaged joints because too much force can break more cartilage, leading to a joint replacement.

DO NOT RUN WITH ARTHRITIS IN KNEES OR HIPS

Running is almost always contraindicated if you have joint damage in the legs, hips or lower back because during running, your foot hits the ground with a force that is transmitted up your leg all the way to your back. The faster you run, the greater and more damaging the force of your foot strike. If you want to run with joint pain, you must run very slowly, and even then, you are still transmitting the foot strike force up your leg and into your back.

BEST SPORTS FOR ARTHRITIS

The safest sports for people with painful joints are those that do not involve foot strike force. Cycling is done in a smooth rotary motion. Swimming helps protect your joints because of the buoyancy of the water. Exercise equipment such as elliptical trainers or stair steppers will allow you to move your joints without pounding on your feet. Any of these activities help you to strengthen the muscles around the damaged joints and keep the tendons flexible. Whatever sport you choose, the same rules of training that athletes use apply to you:

BACKGROUND BEFORE PEAKING

Start out by pedaling, walking or swimming very slowly and stop if your muscles feel heavy or hurt. Stop even if you have just started your workout for that day. When you can pedal, walk or swim for 30 minutes a day without increasing your joint pain, you are ready to start training.

STRESS AND RECOVER

If you do not exercise intensely enough to feel some burning in your muscles, your muscles will not get stronger. You have to work hard enough to damage muscles because healing strengthens them. Athletes take a harder workout on one day in which they feel a burning in their muscles. When you exercise hard enough to feel sore on the next day, you should go slowly for as many days as it takes for the muscles to heal and the soreness to go away. The normal soreness you feel 8 to 24 hours after you have taken an intense workout is called Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS).

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DOMS AND AN INJURY

DOMS is symmetrical; you feel the same soreness on both sides of your body. Also, DOMS does not worsen with easy exercise. Stop exercising immediately if the pain does not improve as you continue to move. If your discomfort increases as you exercise, you have an injury or are headed for an injury.

IF YOUR JOINTS HURT TOO MUCH TO EXERCISE

If your joint pain is so severe that you cannot exercise, you need to find some way to have your joints moved for you. Go to a physical therapist who will move your joints for you and use massage, heat, cold or electrical stimulation to help you regain the ability to move the joints. Allowing your joints to stay in one position without daily movement will cause further joint damage and make your arthritis pain worse.

Salomon XTrail Pilipinas Test Run

The fun and challenge of trail running tests not just a runner's speed, but also his agility, balance, and physical and mental strength all throughout the trail race. Seeing a picturesque view of mother nature and traversing on its rocks, soil, mud and rivers makes it even more beautiful and astounding. Such difference from road running gives me a lot of excitement whenever there's a chance for me to join a trail race.

Last Saturday (17 March 2012) was a privileged day for me and other runner-bloggers who got to be invited for the test run of Salomon XTrail Pilipinas happening in less than 12 days on the 31st of March, 2012. The race will be staged afoot at one of the most scenic places and inviting views of the Country, Tagaytay Highlands and Midlands Resort - the same venue where the Nathan Ridge run was held last November.

Unlike during our Nathan Ridge test run, the weather that greeted us at Tagaytay Highlands was much warmer. The fogs were absent with only a short breeze of air passing us by.

As of briefing time, all the slots in each distance categories for the upcoming Salomon XTrail Pilipinas run was already filled-up overhead to its target limit of 800, totaling to 1,000 registered participants. The categories that were first closed were the 6km beginner-friendly and 24km distance for the hardcore. To date, the 24km is the toughest and first ever longest trail distance that will be staged in Tagaytay Highlands.

Like the previous Nathan Ridge run which is also under the belt of Primer Group of Companies such as Salomon, this will be a green event that will ditch out the use of plastic and disposable cups or bottles. So all the participants are encouraged to bring their own hydration packs or bottles. Nathan handheld bottles were offered to participants as an option in the registration sheet at a 50% discount rate.

Other things that should be taken note of:
  1. Shuttle bus will be provided to all participants at R.O.X in BGC at 2:00AM;
  2. Race starts at 5:30AM at the Ampitheater of Tagaytay Midlands;
  3. Cut-off time from the gun-start is four (4) hours. The cut-off is meant only for the start of the program and not to sweep-off the runners who are still on the course;
  4. And as this is a trail run, self-sufficiency is expected as there are only seven (7) hydration stations that can be set-up along the course.
  5. The 24km distance is called "mountain run" and will have a number of elevation changes.
  6. Click on the link to know more about the technical details of the race route
  7. The Philippine Skyrunning Association (or PhilSky, formerly known as PSA) will be holding a trail running clinic and race course preview on Wednesday, 21 March 2012, at R.O.X in BGC, 7PM to 9PM.
Enjoy some of our photos taken during the test run:

Heat Stroke

What is heat stroke?
  • is a medical emergency
  • it occurs when the body overheats due to hot and humid weather or as a result of too much direct exposure to the sun, and sweating cannot cool down the body.

Symptoms of heat stroke?
  • warm feeling
  • flushed skin
  • faintness
  • dizziness
  • weakness
  • headache

if left untreated, this will lead to:
  • high fever of 41 C
  • rapid heartbeat
  • convulsion
  • delirium
  • unconsciousness

How is heat stroke treated?
  • Get the person indoors.
  • Remove clothing and gently apply cool water to the skin followed by fanning to stimulate sweating.
  • Apply ice packs to the armpits, wrists, ankles, and groin.
  • Have the person lie down in a cool area with their feet slightly elevated.
  • Bed rest

How can heat stroke be prevented?
  1. Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid tea, coffee, soda, and alcohol as these can lead to dehydration.
  2. Wear lightweight, tightly woven, loose-fitting clothing in light colors.
  3. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat, sunglasses, and using an umbrella.
  4. Try to spend as much time indoors as possible.
  5. Schedule vigorous activity and sports for cooler times of the day. Increase time spent outdoors gradually to get your body used to the heat.
  6. If you have a chronic condition, talk to your doctor about extra precautions you can take to protect yourself against heat stroke.

XTerra and Tesla Compression Gears

Mevez Business Ventures Inc. (MBVI) recently introduced in the Philippine market an extensive line of compression sportswear products of Xterra, a global brand in premier technical sportswear used by top triathletes around the world. MBVI also launched the European brand, Tesla, with both compression products and high quality running shoes. Tesla sportswear is named after Nicholas Tesla, a designer of customized sportscars, whose name is synonymous with creativity, style and quality.

Compression wear are used by top athletes in virtually every sport today such as triathlon, biking, running, water sports, track and field, baseball, golf, badminton and even as exercise wear. Compression wear applies the principle of compression bands used in medicine to promote and enhance optimum blood flow and conserve the energy of muscles in a person’s body. It is also used to prevent the tightening of muscles during cold weather conditions that could lead to muscle cramps. It is thus used by football, ice hockey and basketball players underneath their jersey uniforms for this purpose.

Because of the technical nature of compression wear and their prohibitively high costs, as well as limited stores offering the products in the Philippines, very few Filipinos use the product in their sports activities. As a result, the benefits of compression technology have not reached many Filipinos even with the popularity of running, biking and triathlon events in the country today.

MBVI’s aim was therefore to introduce quality, global compression brands at prices that most Filipinos can now afford. While other products of comparable quality were previously available at prices ranging from P4,500 to P7,000, MBVI is currently offering its extensive line of Xterra and Tesla compression wear at prices from P1,600 for sleeveless triathlon wear to only P2300 for the long tights preferred by runners. Short sleeve styles are priced at P1,700, long tops at P2,100, long tops with neckband at P2,200 and short tights at P2,100.

Xterra and Tesla compression wear are lightweight, keep the wearer always dry as sweat evaporates quickly, has anti-bacterial properties to protect the user from harmful bacteria that attack an athlete during strenuous physical activities(when the immune system is low), provides ultraviolet protection(it has a UPF factor of 50), and is semi waterproof to keep the skin dry such as during the swimming leg of triathlons.

Xterra and Tesla compression wear have become so popular even among non-athletes that the company recently released a new line of casual fit designs to cater to people who wish to wear compression shirts as casual wear to avail of the benefits of the many properties of the products. The casual fits are priced from P1, 500 to P2, 000.

Xterra recently sponsored triathlon events in Cebu and Laguna (Nuvali) and in the first quarter of 2012, another triathlon event in Cebu. MBVI is coordinating with the organizers of the upcoming event for Xterra products to be awarded to winners.

Xterra and Tesla compression wear are currently available at select stores of Olympic Village in Metro Manila, Cebu and Bacolod, R.O.X Bonifacio High Street and Zalora.com. Outside of these areas, direct orders are also accepted.

For channels partnership details and product information, the company contact numbers are (02) 5779298, 09178323341 and email at mevezsports@yahoo.com. Also, like our Facebook page: Xterra Tesla PH and follow us on Twitter: xterratesla.
